- AMY CHEATLEPAINTINGS + INSTALLATIONS
Ithaca, NY"Cheatle’s paintings exemplify a sort of urbane primitivism in keeping with a strong tradition in modernist art. They present beauty-in-rawness and evoke spaces, worlds that demand attentive exploration, drawing out their menagerie of hidden aspects." --Arthur Whitman, Ithaca Journal Large Canvases
These works are non-representational canvases, influenced by the beauty of mark making, wide open skies, worked earth, and the wild passage of time. They range in size from 3’x3’ to 5'x6'. All are water-based media- some include plaster, sand, mortar, charcoal, clay and earth. Working physically on large canvases with hands and body, rich materials, textures and colors reconnects the mind with tactile experiences where beauty still folds into mystery. Canvases are built over time, by accumulations of flow, handwork and erosion. Installation pieces brought earth, seed, water, sensors, software, sound, and human engagement together.
